Dysarthria

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder resulting from weakness, reduced coordination, or impaired control of the muscles involved in speech production. This may affect respiratory support for speech, vocal fold function, and the movement of the lips, tongue, and jaw. As a result, speech may be characterized by reduced volume, slowed rate, imprecise articulation, and decreased intelligibility.

Dysarthria occurs due to damage to the motor pathways of the nervous system responsible for speech, which may involve the brain, brainstem, or spinal cord. There are different types and severities of dysarthria based on location and extent of injury. It may occur as a result of neurological injury, such as traumatic brain injury or stroke, or a progressive neurological disease such as Parkinson’s disease.

Treatment for dysarthria focuses on improving the strength, coordination, and control of the muscles used for speech. We offer LSVT address speech deficits associated with Parkinson’s disease. For individuals with more severe communication challenges, intervention may include training with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. AAC options range from low-tech strategies, such as gestures or pointing, to high-tech solutions, including speech-generating devices and typing-based communication systems.

Aphasia

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects the ability to understand or express language, often following a brain injury such as a stroke. Its severity ranges from mild (anomia) to severe (global aphasia), and can impact reading, writing, word-finding, conversation comprehension, gestures, and numerical abilities. While aphasia does not affect intelligence, it may co-occur with cognitive impairments.

Aphasia can significantly affect daily life, including returning to work, participating in community activities, and communicating with friends and family, potentially impacting mental health.

Treatment uses evidence-based, restorative techniques to rebuild the neurological pathways involved in language. Our person-centered approach focuses on functional goals to support re-entry into meaningful activities. Therapy may also include caregiver training, compensatory strategies, AAC, home practice programs, and faith-based encouragement when welcomed by the client.

Cognitive-Communication Disorder

Speech therapy can support individuals with cognitive-communication disorders resulting from brain injury, such as TBI or stroke, or progressive neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Therapy identifies deficits across cognitive domains and develops individualized plans to help clients return to meaningful daily activities.

Areas of cognition addressed may include:

  • Attention: difficulty shifting focus between tasks, maintaining focus, or selectively attending to relevant information.

  • Processing speed: challenges understanding fast or complex speech.

  • Memory: difficulty with new learning, working memory, remembering future tasks (e.g., taking medication), or recalling past events.

  • Metacognition: insight into one’s own abilities and limitations.

  • Problem-solving and inferencing: applying knowledge to real-life situations, such as managing a missing prescription.

  • Spatial awareness: challenges attending to parts of a visual field, such as the left side of a page when reading.

Treatment Goals

The goal of therapy is to maximize independence in daily life. This client-centered approach may include restoring lost communication skills, modifying environmental barriers, using AAC or compensatory aids, and providing caregiver training to support success across home, work, and community settings.

Swallowing Disorder

Dysphagia is a medical term for difficulty moving food or liquids from the mouth through the throat into the stomach. Speech-language pathologists specialize in evaluating and treating oropharyngeal dysphagia, which involves the mouth and throat.

You may benefit from a swallowing evaluation if you:

  • Have difficulty chewing or clearing food from your mouth

  • Cannot eat certain foods or textures because they feel stuck
    Experience pain while swallowing

  • Cough or choke more than usual while eating or drinking

  • Have concerns about aspiration (food, liquid, or saliva entering the airway)

  • Have been instructed to thicken your liquids

A physician referral is required before evaluation and treatment can begin. Please note that we are currently not providing pediatric swallowing services.
