Speech Therapy in Houston
Stuttering
Stuttering is a disruption in the normal flow of speech, which may include repetitions of sounds or words, prolonged sounds, or blocks (pauses or tension before a sound). Secondary behaviors, such as tapping, eye blinking, using filler words, or avoiding certain words, may develop to manage stuttering moments.
Stuttering can impact social, academic, and professional life and may contribute to mental health challenges, bullying, or social exclusion. Determining whether a child needs intervention can be difficult, as periods of typical dysfluency are common in language development, and older children may develop strategies to mask stuttering.
A comprehensive stuttering assessment includes a speech sample analysis, language screening, and interviews with the client and caregiver. The speech therapist will gather information on the frequency of stutter-like disfluencies, the child’s reaction to the stutter, and how the child tries to modify their speech to avoid the dysfluent moments.
Treatment
Treatment is highly individualized and may include fluency strategies, counseling, and caregiver training. Goals focus on improving communication effectiveness, building confidence in verbal communication across settings, reducing secondary behaviors, and minimizing the impact of stuttering. For young children, treatment may consist of working with parents and families to create a supportive, low-pressure communication environment that fosters positive attitudes toward speech to improve fluency and reduce negative emotional responses related to communication difficulties.
